About
Since moving back to the Northwest in 2012, our family has been searching out wheelchair accessible trails throughout Western Washington. Having cruised dozens of great (and not so great) trails, we’ve come to know what makes a smooth ride and enjoyable experience for us.

Lucas has used a wheelchair to get around for all of his 14 years; he also uses a ventilator to help him breathe and needs a suction machine around him it all times. Still, we’re able to cover a lot of ground with Lucas in his manual wheelchair, and we pride ourselves in seeking out new beautiful, trails all the time.
We realized that posting some of our favorite trails on a website would serve other people with disabilities, so we created “Rolling Washington” in 2020. Our bias is toward shorter, super-smooth trails — Lucas’s chair does not do well going over rocks or big roots. But we know that some wheelchairs are sportier and some wheelchair users are buff mountaineers who go for miles and miles. If that’s you, you might be underwhelmed by our choices. However, if you like a peaceful, flat 1-2 miles of beautiful trail or urban walkway, this site might be for you! Maybe you’re with a toddler or a person who just needs a short, flat walk. Maybe you’re taking a stroller. Or a walker. Or a cane. Maybe you have other reasons you need flat trails. Whatever your body needs, we hope this site is useful to you!
