Des Moines Creek Trail
We were excited to discover this trail, which starts right on the line between SeaTac and Des Moines, near the Angle Lake light rail station. There is a small parking lot is at Des Moines Creek Trail Park right off S. 200th St.
The trail runs along a creek all the way to the Puget Sound (at Des Moines Beach). It’s a really pretty trail, tucked into a ravine with large trees all around. For most of it you wouldn’t even know that there are various large Amazon warehouses within a few hundred yards. Also, when we returned a year later we found that the sound of airplanes taking off from SeaTac airport nearby was overwhelming. Maybe the first time there weren’t as many flight because it was early in the pandemic? Or maybe Sunday mornings have more departures? Whatever the reason it kinda ruined the vibe at times.
Lucas says, “that return trip really gave you a workout Daddy! I could hear you breathing hard as you pushed my chair up the hill.”
Key stats:
Distance: We went about 1 mile and it looks like it would be about 2 miles to the Sound. There are mile markers every 1/4 mile that help you track how far you’ve gone.
Wheelchair accessible parking? Just one spot
Wheelchair accessible bathrooms? No
Trail condition? Wide, well maintained, paved trail with a yellow line down the middle. The trail is slightly downhill most of the way which means its uphill on the return trip.
Highlights? We rolled along the trail on a beautiful, late winter day with the sun peaking through the trees. Lucas noticed the sound of the creek getting louder as we rolled down the trail; next time we’ll try to get all the way to Sound.
