Illahee Forest Preserve
We discovered this trail recently through the Washington Trails Association website which has a great filter showing wheelchair accessible trails. This one must have been added recently since we hadn’t heard about it before… probably because the wheelchair friendly portion of the trail was just completed in the fall of 2023.
One of the best parts was getting there — the ferry ride from Seattle to Bremerton is nearly an hour long and it was glorious to enjoy the deck on a sunny, spring day. For the return we drove (since the ferries are relatively infrequent) which takes a little over an hour back to Seattle
Key stats:
Distance: The wheelchair accessible portion of the trail is about a quarter mile long but we extended another half mile.
Wheelchair accessible parking? Yes, 2 spots near the picnic area
Wheelchair accessible bathrooms? No
Trail condition? Hard-packed gravel, well maintained. A few moderately steep hills.
Highlights? It’s always nice to find a recently upgraded trail made to be more wheelchair friendly. And the path meanders through a beautiful section of forest with lots of birds (and likely other critters.) Were it not for failing medical equipment we would have stuck around even longer!
