West Hylebos Wetlands
We were so excited to find this trail in Federal Way on a nice spring day in the midst of the pandemic. It’s got one of the most extensive boardwalks we’ve found in King County and once you’ve descended into the wetlands from the parking area (after an initial gravel trail) its hard to believe you’re so close to a commercial area. You can’t help but wistfully imagine what this part of the Puget Sound region was like before most of it was clear-cut, paved, and urbanized. Alas, we’re grateful that some areas like this have been preserved,
Key stats:
Distance: 1.2 miles round-trip
Wheelchair accessible parking? Yes, 1 spot
Wheelchair accessible bathrooms? Technically yes, but its a port-a-potty
Trail condition? Starts off as a gravel trail, then arrives to the boardwalk, which is about 6 feet wide and well maintained (though bumpy at times).
Highlights? It’s an interpretative trail with descriptions of the nature and creatures of the wetlands. We enjoyed reading all the signs to the kids along the way. Arriving at the outlook over the pond was the big payoff, a great spot to rest and snack and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The day we were there included beautiful clouds (see final picture below).
