Fort Casey State Park

Visit Fort Casey near the Coupeville ferry dock on Whidbey Island for great views of the Puget Sound and Olympic mountains. There is new ADA compliant sidewalk that takes you alongside the old fort and the restrooms and picnic area are also ADA.

Key stats:

Distance: The paved sidewalk and walkway along the fort go for maybe  1/3 of a mile. You can also go from the parking lot along the road to the lighthouse. There are supposedly 2.5 miles of trail around the Fort but much of it is inaccessible.

Wheelchair accessible parking? Yes

Wheelchair accessible bathrooms? Yes

Trail condition? The main trail from the parking lot to the fort is paved and great for wheelchairs. Other areas are tougher to maneuver, including bumpy grassy trails and hard packed gravel.

Highlights? We love flying kites and there is almost always a good wind for kite-flying at Fort Casey. That can make it deceptively chilly even on a summer day so be sure to bring your jacket. Weaving through the tunnels in the fort is also fun and most of it can be accessed in a wheelchair. Finally, if you’re feeling ambitious you can push (or motor your powerchair) up the gentle, grassy slope on the north side of the Fort which will give you access to the area on top and allow you to check out the old canons.
