Gazzam Lake Nature Preserve (Bainbridge Island)

We love taking Washington state ferries around the Puget Sound (great accessibility!) and the one to Bainbridge is a favorite. But until recently we hadn’t found many trails to explore on the island. Gazzam Lake came up in a google search and we figured we’d give it a shot.

We parked at the Secondary lot at 6105 NE Marshall Road (north of the preserve) and took off on the path toward the lake. Unfortunately we couldn’t get Lucas down to the lake in his wheelchair but the dirt path that parallels the lake makes for a nice walk in the woods.

Key stats:

Distance: 1.2 mile trail from the north to the south end of the preserve. We only did about 3/4 of a mile.

Wheelchair accessible parking? No. It’s a relatively small unpaved lot but there was plenty of room for the wheelchair ramp that comes out of our van.

Wheelchair accessible bathrooms? No

Trail condition? Hard packed dirt and gravel. Mostly unobstructed; a few larger rocks and occasion roots but easily passable in a wheelchair, though it makes for a bumpy ride.

Highlights? A classic Northwest forest with lots of beautiful trees and vegetation. Seems like a good place to see wildlife. Despite our best attempts we were unable to spot the Gazzam lake monster.
