Springbrook Trail Boardwalk (Renton)

This is one of the first walks we did in the spring of 2020 when the world had just shut down because of Covid. Kids were out of school, parks and playgrounds were closed, and yet it was starting to get warmer outside. So we realized that we were going to have to get creative in order to coax our family outside consistently, and so we got to the task of discovering new wheelchair accessible trails.

The Springbrook trail is one of those weird, suburban trails within shouting distance of various warehouses and box stores. It’s right on the line between Renton and Tukwila, not far from the Tukwila Amtrak station. See map at right.

As you drive up you start to figure you must be in the wrong spot… but once you find the trail and enter the boardwalk its actually a really cool stretch of revitalized wetlands that feels somewhat remote.

Key stats:

Distance:  The boardwalk stretches for about a quarter mile, followed by a 1/2 mile long section of paved path (which is less remote-feeling.)

Wheelchair accessible parking? No, just street parking. There’s a lot where you can park right off SW 27th St.

Wheelchair accessible bathrooms? No

Trail condition? The boardwalk was constructed about 10 years ago and is still in good condition. The paved trail is also in good condition.

Highlights? You can hear and see tons of birds in the wetlands. There are also some interpretive signs. The boardwalk is over before you know it so take your time — bring a snack, rest on one of the benches, enjoy the sounds of birds.
