Tommy Thompson Trail (Anacortes)
We’ve been hearing about the Tommy Thompson trail for years and finally got a chance to check it out during a road trip in the summer of 2021. It is indeed worth the hype — a very unique, paved path that includes a land-bridge through the middle of Fidalgo Bay — and at the same time we found it jarring to stare at two giant gas refineries smokestacks as we rolled along the trail.
Key stats:
Distance: The trail is 3.3 miles long, much of which weaves through Anacortes and its outskirts. The most scenic part is the last mile or so which you can access from the parking lot at the Fidalgo Bay RV Resort.
Wheelchair accessible parking? Yes, a few spots around the RV park.
Wheelchair accessible bathrooms? Yes
Trail condition? Wide, paved path.
Highlights?
This really is a remarkable accessible trail, especially the rocky causeway and trestle that extend out over Fidalgo Bay. The views of Mt. Baker and the Puget Sound are spectacular and you can expect to see a lot of birds as well. It is very exposed so bring sunscreen if you’re out there in the middle of summer.
